How much do water heater rebates take off?
About $1,000 on an ENERGY STAR heat pump water heater (Utility heat pump water heater rebates). Standard tanks rarely qualify.
Tank, tankless or heat pump?
A tank is cheapest to install and lasts about 11 years. Tankless costs more up front, lasts about 20 years and saves around $100 a year on gas. A heat pump unit saves about $117 a year against a gas tank and far more against an electric one, but needs space, air flow and a condensate drain.
What size water heater do I need?
A 40-gallon tank suits one to three people, 50 gallons suits three to four, and 75 gallons or a tankless unit suits larger homes or soaking tubs. Peak-hour demand matters more than the number of bedrooms.
